City Receives $1.2 Million Grant For Gas Line Expansion

Expansion Allows Local Industry to Expand, Add Jobs

The City of Columbia has received $1.2 million in federal funds to expand natural gas lines on Ky. 61 north to Green County, a project that will lead to the expansion of an existing Adair County industry.

Mayor Pam Hoots made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

The gas line project is a $2 million expansion, but the city has already received confirmation for other grant funding and will only pay for 3 percent of the project, or around $60,000.

Gas lines already exist in the area but they are only two-inch lines. The expansion will include six-inch lines past J & L Gate and end with 4-inch lines. Gas department foreman Jerry Watson said a tap will also be added to allow a future expansion in the Milltown area for the poultry industry that has requested gas lines in the past.

Mayor Hoots thanked Congressman James Comer for his assistance in receiving the funds, which are coming through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration Disaster Supplemental funds.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. You can view the mayor’s announcement at www.facebook.com/adaircountycommunityvoice.
