The candidates in the May primary are set, but filing is just beginning for the nonpartisan races in the November general election. Mayor, city council, Adair County School Board members and soil conservation members have until June 2 at 4 p.m. local time to file.
City residents only can vote for mayor and city council. There are six seats on the city council. Everyone who files will be on the ballot and the six with the highest number of votes will be seated on the council for the next two years.
Incumbent Mayor Pamela Hoots filed for re-election on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Currently, she is the only candidate to have filed for office in any of the nonpartisan races.
Hoots is seeking her third term consecutive as mayor of Columbia. Hoots was first elected mayor in 1989 and served one term when the position was considered part time. She ran and was elected again in 2018 and 2022.
