A residence on Grissom Street was a total loss after a fire on Monday evening. Adair County 911 received a call at 6:38 p.m. reporting smoke coming from a residence.
Deputy Brandon Hitch, Officer Travis Bell, and Sgt. Trevor Foster were the first to arrive on the scene. At that time, the house was fully involved with flames coming from the front entrance.
The owner, David Morris, was the only one in the residence at the time of the fire.
“I must have fell asleep with a cigarette,” Morris said at the scene. “I am lucky that I smelled the smoke quick enough to get out.”
The Columbia Adair County Fire Department with mutual aid from Breeding Volunteer Fire Department were able to contain the fire to the residence. Firefighters were on scene for almost two hours.
One firefighter suffered a minor injury and was transported by Adair County EMS to TJ Health Columbia. He was treated and released.
