The Adair County Indians put on a show Friday night in their first home game of the season, rolling past Casey County 69-18.
After a slower start than expected, the Indians settled in and took control of the game.
Coach Cameron Dukes said the team’s limited practice time during the week played a part in the slow start. Due to extreme heat, Adair County had only one day of practice on the field.
“It was more of a mental preparation, physical preparation, getting our bodies right with treatment,” Dukes said.
Still, Dukes said the Indians know they have to be ready from the opening whistle.
“Starting a little bit slow is kind of expected, but the standard’s the standard,” he said. “We got to come out a little bit faster than that.”
Once the Indians got going, they controlled the game.
“We determined every single aspect of the game tonight, and that’s how we got to play all the time,” Dukes said.
Several Indians stood out in the win.
Dukes praised the offensive and defensive lines for their play throughout the night.
“Every chance he [Braxton McKinney] got, he capitalized on plays with his legs or his arm,” Dukes said.
Madden Moye also had a strong night while stepping into his role, including a big kickoff return.
Freshman Cooper Brock made several plays on the kickoff team.
Callum Darnell also came close to making some history.
Darnell finished one touchdown short of breaking the school record for most touchdowns in a game.
He said breaking the record was something he would like to accomplish, but it was not his main focus.
“I’d rather come out here and get a good win with my guys than break the record,” Darnell said.
For Darnell, winning comes first.
“It’d be great to accomplish it, but like I said, I just want to come out here the Friday night and win,” he said.
Darnell said one of his biggest influences was nana, who died from cancer in 2021. He said that she is a big reason why he plays football.
The Indians will look to carry Friday night’s momentum into tomorrow’s game at home against McCreary Central.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
