Superintendent receives outstanding scores

Superintendent Jason Faulkner’s annual evaluation was presented Thursday night with him receiving an “outstanding” score. The evaluation is based on seven standards set forth by the Kentucky School Boards Association. The scale used is 0 – 4, with 0 being unacceptable and 4 being outstanding. Faulkner received a rating of 4 as the average of all five board members’ scores.
The board unanimously approved a contract amendment for Faulkner but did not specify what the amendment contained. The Community Voice requested specifics about the changes and was told since the actual specifics were not read in the meeting, they will have to be clarified in a future meeting before they take affect.
In other action, Faulkner said Senate Bill 181 required all school districts to create a policy stating the acceptable forms of traceable communication that would be used. Jason Rector, director of technology and chief information officer, spoke on the topic. The school already uses Apptegy for mass communication and the website. Rooms is an add-on to Apptegy and is a form of traceable communication. There is an app and a website both for Rooms. Infinite Campus is also traceable communication and can be used. This was approved unanimously.
A great portion of the meeting was the presentation of the property insurance policies to cover the schools. Tommy Adams with Charles M. Moore Insurance Company recommended that the board continue with the same companies. Rates are continuing to go up on property due to the storms and weather-related events across the state.
The insurance company works on a brokerage agreement with the Board of Education, which means they receive a flat fee for their services and any commission received from the insurance companies is returned to the district. This year, they returned approximately $23,000. The board approved to continue the policies.
A new insurance policy that the board approved was student liability and accident policy. This will cover all students on campus. The policy will cover 100% with a $1000 cap on physical therapy. The annual cost of the policy is $56,345.40.
A personnel policy was in reference to personnel who have been terminated. Terminated for cause employees cannot apply for employment with the Adair County Board of Education again. The verbiage was also changed to allow for employees who have been non renewed for cause to reapply. Non renewed for cause can include reasons such as budget cuts and that should not disqualify them from future employment.
This was the final meeting for student board member Piper Kemp. Kemp gave an update from the end of the school year.
“As I stand before you one last time with this report, I would like to sincerely thank the board for this incredible opportunity and for their ongoing commitment to our students and staff,” said Kemp.
Faulkner presented Kemp with a gift from the board. Kemp has recently taken a position as an EMT. She was presented with a personalized portfolio and a stethoscope.
“I love how inquisitive you have been about everything from the time that you were selected to be a student member, you had tons of questions, and I really appreciate that. I appreciate your reports every month. You give us an idea from your alls point of view,” Faulkner said.
