The Adair County Elementary School Academic Team competed in the Regional Governor’s Cup on Saturday, March 1, earning a regional championship and advancing to the state level in Future Problem Solving.
The team traveled to Bonnieville Elementary in Hart County for the competition. ACES Future Problem-Solving Team captured first place and claimed the Elementary Regional Governor’s Cup Championship.
The team previously won the district competition with a booklet focused on the topic of space exploration. Video games were the topic of the booklet submitted at the regional level. The team’s booklet will now advance to the state level for scoring.
Members of the championship team are Luke Collins, Genevieve Wrensch, Alice Kotter, Eleanor Kraner and Paisley Webster. The team is coached by Jeana Pike.
In individual competition, Jase Sneed placed third in social studies.
Future problem solving is a creative writing competition that challenges students to address potential future issues using critical-thinking skills. Students are given a future scene related to the current topic and follow a six-step process to identify challenges, determine an underlying problem, develop solutions, establish criteria and create an action plan.
Students are given two hours to complete the process and submit all six steps.
“I am extremely proud of the accomplishments of the ACES Academic Team,” said Pike. “Getting our booklet to state was one of our goals, but not an easy feat. At the elementary level, students are starting from scratch learning the six-step creative writing process in order to complete a booklet.”
“Every year, I tell the students if they want a challenge, FPS is for you. Each of these students stepped up to the challenge and finished strong,” she said. “I am so proud of each and every one of these kids. They were so committed to the process.”
