Phyllis Jean Akin, 81, of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at her residence. She was born in Calsag, Ill. on September 23, 1943 to the late Vasco and Pearl Gibson Coomer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Bill Dickey Akin in 2015.
Mrs. Akin was a member of the Flatwoods Separate Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, doing crafts, especially Christmas ornaments, cooking, fishing, and spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include two children, Karren Loy (Howard) of Columbia and Bill Dickey Akin, Jr. (Angie) of Burkesville; a stepson, Larry Akin (Rhonda) of Decatuir, Ala.; 15 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a son-in-law, David Smith of Campbellsville; four siblings, Cleda Coleman (George) of Tennessee, Ronald Coomer of Russell Springs, Karen Lissak (Bob) of Illinois, and Betty Melson of Columbia; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Coomer, Lillie Coomer, and Dawn Coomer all of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dinah Smith; and seven siblings, Opal Coffey, Louise Allen, Elwood Coomer, Dale Coomer, Earl Coomer, Donald Coomer, and Maurice Coomer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with burial in the Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and will continue Saturday morning until time for the service at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.
